MUDs & text worlds
Studying MUD history, player culture, world design, command systems, social mechanics, persistence, and the design patterns that make text worlds feel alive.

TEXT WORLDS • RETRO GAMES • CREATIVE SYSTEMS
InkAndAnsi explores the past, present, and future of text-native play—from Multi-User Dungeons and interactive fiction to retro consoles, ANSI culture, streaming, and new experimental forms of interactive entertainment.
A creative technology studio for the worlds between words.
InkAndAnsi is dedicated to text-based and retro interactive entertainment: the games, communities, interfaces, aesthetics, and design ideas that proved a screen did not need millions of polygons to feel enormous.
Our work looks backward and forward at the same time. We explore the lineage of MUDs, parser games, early online worlds, console eras, BBS culture, ASCII and ANSI art—then ask what those ideas can teach us about modern game design, streaming, community, and intelligent narrative systems.
The mission is simple: keep text-era creativity visible, approachable, and alive while using it as raw material for new experiments.

A Multi-User Dungeon is a shared, persistent online world typically experienced through text. Players read descriptions, type commands, explore rooms, interact with objects and characters, roleplay, fight, build, socialize, and create stories together in real time.
The original MUD was developed at the University of Essex beginning in the late 1970s. Its core idea was radical and durable: put multiple people inside the same programmable adventure world and let their actions matter to one another. By 1984, more than a hundred MUDs and variants were active around the world.
MUDs became an important branch in the family tree of online games. The social, persistent, multiplayer worlds they pioneered helped establish ideas that later appeared in graphical MMORPGs—while text MUDs continued evolving in their own direction.
Constraint can be a creative engine.
Text-first games turn language into interface, environment, character, inventory, geography, and possibility. A room description becomes a stage. A command line becomes a controller. The player supplies the rendering engine: imagination.
That does not make text gaming a primitive version of graphical gaming. It makes it a different medium—one capable of ambiguity, scale, personalization, improvisation, and expressive density that can be difficult to reproduce visually.
Interactive fiction remains an active creative form today, supported by living archives, modern authoring systems, competitions, and communities continuing to publish new games.
Four connected areas, all centered on the culture and future of interactive entertainment.
RESEARCH
Studying MUD history, player culture, world design, command systems, social mechanics, persistence, and the design patterns that make text worlds feel alive.
DEVELOPMENT
Prototyping interactive concepts that use parsers, procedural systems, narrative logic, AI-assisted interaction, and other modern tools without abandoning the strengths of text.
STREAMING
Streaming MUDs alongside retro and console games, treating play as both entertainment and fieldwork: examining interfaces, mechanics, design constraints, and the culture surrounding them.
TEXTMODE CULTURE
Celebrating the visual language of the text screen—from ASCII constructions to the 16-color ANSI art scene that flourished around dial-up bulletin board systems.

Type a command. Press Start. Choose a path. Explore a map. Learn a system. Meet another player. Games change shape across generations, but the invitation remains remarkably consistent: enter a set of rules and discover what is possible inside them.
InkAndAnsi treats gaming history as a connected system, not a museum shelf.
Parser adventures, MUDs, shared worlds, interactive fiction.
ASCII, ANSI, BBS culture, command lines, textmode identity.
Controllers, cartridges, couch play, iconic design constraints.
Persistent communities, multiplayer systems, streaming, shared play.
New interfaces, intelligent systems, experimental narrative play.
